It provides a wide persistence adjustment range bigger than LightBoost 10% vs 50% vs 100%, including the ability to go sharper/dimmer than LightBoost (10%) or brighter than LightBoost (100%).

Usage Instructions

1. Enable “Blur Reduction” via your monitor menus.
2. Next, load a TestUFO Moving Photo test in full screen mode (Chrome/FireFox/Opera).
3. Bring Blur Busters Strobe Utility window to the front.


Enabling this checkbox activates your ability to customize Persistence and Crosstalk.
NOTE: This will cause a lot of flicker if you are running at only 60Hz. To avoid visible flicker, it is recommended you run at a refresh rate of 100Hz or higher, unless you plan to use motion blur reduction for 60Hz (e.g. video, emulators, 60fps-limited games).

Persistence (also known as “Strobe Duty”)

Run a TestUFO Moving Photo (via a supported web browser). This motion test creates motion similar to fast panning/strafing/turning in games. While viewing the motion test, adjust Persistence to user preference. Adjusting will affect motion clarity during fast horizontal motion. A lower setting will result in clearer motion (darker image), while a higher setting will result in a brighter image (less clear motion). You lose brightness at lower persistence settings (shorter strobe backlight flash lengths). As a general rule of thumb, the faster the motion (e.g. 1920 pixels/second), the more effective lower persistence becomes. Benefits are most visible when playing games at 120fps at 120Hz.

Crosstalk (also known as “Strobe Phase” or “Area”)

Adjusting this will adjust the visibility of the “ghosting band”. Adjust while viewing TestUFO Strobe Crosstalk (via a supported web browser) in full screen mode. While adjusting Crosstalk, you will observe the ghosting zone will shift upwards and downwards. The ideal position is to adjust until the middle of the screen has the least ghosting.

A good setting will improve clarity of high-speed panning motion during high frame rates. Alternatively, an earlier strobe phase can also reduce input lag, with a trade-off of increased ghosting. The TestUFO Strobe Crosstalk test is a severe ghosting test to make adjustments easier to see. Real-world performance will usually look better in actual game play.

Additional Improvement In Ghosting: “Vertical Total 1350”

There is a further additional improvement possible, the Vertical Total 1350 Trick to reduce ghosting even further.

By using a larger blanking intervals via a Custom Resolution Utility, this creates more time for LCD GtG pixel transitions to complete between refresh cycles for strobing. This results in cleaner motion with less ghosting (thinner ghosting band at top/bottom edges). This tweak is only possible refresh rates lower than the monitor’s maximum (e.g. 120Hz instead of 144Hz).

  1. Run either one of the following utilities:
    A) NVIDIA Control Panel -> Change Resolution -> Customize… (if using NVIDIA); or
    B) ToastyX Custom Resolution Utility (if using AMD).
  2. Create a new Custom Resolution of 1920×1080 at 120Hz (or refresh rate below 120Hz)
  3. Change Timing to “Manual”
  4. Change Vertical Total to “1350”
    If using NVIDIA Control Panel, edit “Vertical Total”
    If using ToastyX CRU instead, select “Vertical” and then edit “Total”.
    IMPORTANT: If using ToastyX, set Horizontal “Total” to 2080.
  5. Save the Custom Resolution
    If using NVIDIA Control Panel, Click Test, then click OK, then select 120Hz.
    If using ToastyX Custom Resolution Utility, click OK, and then reboot the computer.
  6. Switch to your newly created mode. You are now using Vertical Total 1350.
  7. With Blur Busters Strobe Utility, re-adjust by following instructions in previous sections. For 120Hz, the “Crosstalk” setting 0 is usually best with the 1350 trick.
  8. There will be only very thin bands of significant ghosting during fast smooth motion only at the very top/bottom edges of screens. The rest of the screen will be very clear motion with very faint or unnoticeable ghosting in most regular game play motion.

Q: Will It Work On XL2420T too?

A: No. Blur Busters Strobe Utility does not work on older T-Series monitors.
For older BenQ T-Series LightBoost (XL2411T, XL2420T, XL2720T) you need a different app, ToastyX Strobelight, which you can download via LightBoost HOWTO.

Q: No Supported Monitors Detected


A: You need a supported BenQ/Zowie monitor.

Verify DDC/CI is turned on, in the BenQ menu.
Monitor Menu -> System -> DDC/CI -> ON

If this does not work:
– Exit other monitor adjusting apps (e.g. Pivot);
DDC-CI– Power cycle the monitor; disable the service menu;
– Try a different monitor port (e.g. DVI vs DP);
– Try a different cable (e.g. another DVI cable);
– Try a different port on your graphics card;
– You need Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1.

Detection of monitors at startup is faster if you use monitor drivers other than “Generic PnP Monitor”.

Q: Unsupported Firmware Detected

util-monitorfoundA: Your BenQ Z-Series monitor is using the older V1 firmware. You will need to install the V2 firmware upgrade on you monitor, in order for Blur Busters Strobe Utility to work. You can do this yourself via these advanced DIY firmware upgrade instructions, or sending your monitor in for servicing by BenQ.

Q: I have an old XL2720. How Do I Upgrade To V2 Firmware?

A: See firmware upgrade instructions. There are several methods of getting V2, including getting BenQ to do it, or doing the upgrade yourself.

Q: How do I use Blur Busters Strobe Utility on BenQ XL2420G G-SYNC Monitor?

A: You need to run the monitor in Classic Mode. Bring up the monitor menu, select “Engine Switch”, and then select “Classic” instead of “G-SYNC”. You need to use a DVI or HDMI cable instead of DisplayPort, when using Strobe Utility with BenQ XL2420G.

Q: Are Multiple Monitors Supported?

A: Yes! Strobe Utility automatically detects all supported Z-Series and G-Series monitors and adjusts on all of them. Adjusting settings such as “Persistence” will adjust all monitors simultaneously.

Q: Nothing Is Happening When I Adjust!

A: Blur Busters Strobe Utility adjusts clarity of motion, so you need to view fast motion (and at frame rates near refresh rate) to see the effects of your adjustments. First, make sure you enable Blur Reduction via your monitor’s menus. Next, make sure you display motion such as TestUFO Strobe Crosstalk while adjusting.
During fast smooth motion, improvement can be seen in before photo & after photo. This affects motion clarity while panning/strafing/turning in games at high frame rates.

Q: Can I use Blur Reduction for Game Consoles and for Television?

A: Yes! You just pre-configure Strobe Utility at 1920×1080 60Hz via computer first, then switch input to the HDMI input for gaming/televison.  You can even unplug your monitor and move it to a different room, after pre-configuring it with Strobe Utility.  The computer is no longer needed after configuring. Currently, Strobe Utility is the only way to get “LightBoost effect” at 60Hz. This is CRT-clarity 60fps at 60Hz with no motion blur!

CAUTION: 60Hz strobing will flicker similar to a 60Hz CRT. You may get increased eyestrain. Take frequent breaks, especially if your eyes are no longer used to 60Hz CRT.

Q: TestUFO Animation Is Running At Only 60fps, Not 120fps!

A: Verify your web browser requirements at
– Try a different web browser; Chrome/FireFox/Opera instead of Internet Explorer.
– Do not use Classic Mode or Basic Mode with Windows 7; You must use Aero mode.
– Try quitting and restarting your web browser (Chrome sometimes needs this).

Q: There Is Still Ghosting (Double-Image Effect) In Fast Horizontal Motion!

A: Some faint ghosting is normal on all strobe backlights. See Motion Blur Reductsion FAQ including LightBoost. Blur Busters Strobe Utility is able to fix about 90% of the double-image ghosting (“strobe crosstalk”) by keeping the screen center clearest, where most of your gameplay focus is. The Utility can turn Blur Reduction from “worse than LightBoost/ULMB” to “similar or better than LightBoost/ULMB” for overall motion quality. The faint ghosting also occurs with LightBoost displays (at the top/bottom edge of screen). This is because of less time for LCD GtG pixel transitions at the screen bottom than at screen center. Blur Busters Strobe Utility allows you to adjust the strobe timing so you have almost no ghosting for the screen center, keeping minor ghosting at the top/bottom edges (much like for LightBoost).

Q: Does Refresh Rate Affect Ghosting (Double-Image Effect)?

A: Yes. Lower refresh rates (e.g. 100Hz or 120Hz instead of 144Hz) will have less strobe crosstalk. Make sure you are running at frame rate = refresh rate (e.g. 120fps @ 120Hz).

Q: I See More Stutters With Blur Reduction. Why?

This is a side effect of CRT motion clarity with strobe backlights including LightBoost, ULMB and BenQ/Zowie Blur Reduction. Lack of motion blur makes microstutters easier to see.
1. Set your gaming mouse to 1000Hz (instead of 500Hz). See Blur Busters Mouse Guide for information why 1000Hz mice can have much less stutter when using Blur Reduction.
2. Run frame rate matching refresh rate (or nearly). Try capping your frame rate close to refresh rate (e.g. fps_max in Source Engine games). Alternatively, running ultra high uncapped VSYNC OFF (e.g. >300fps) can also improve fluidity. Randomly fluctuating framerates can look very “jittery”, with amplified stutters, so stutter control is important. Also, if input lag is less important (e.g. solo play), test VSYNC ON for better fluidity especially for solo-gameplay situations where competition/eSports latency isn’t needed.

Q: Why Is The Default Blur Reduction Calibration So Bad For Ghosting?

A: The factory settings (“Crosstalk”; the timing phase of the strobe backlight flashes) are currently optimized for slightly less input lag (approx ~1-2ms less latency) but at the cost of much worse motion quality compared to LightBoost and other strobe backlights.

Blur Busters Strobe Utility allows you to re-calibrate this manually for much better motion clarity, especially for users who are used to CRTs and LightBoost or ULMB, and expect something “better than LightBoost/ULMB”. Some people don’t see tearing, others see tearing instantly. Some people don’t see stutters, others see stutters instantly. Likewise, many Blur Busters readers are an extremely discerning lot, and are very sensitive to motion imperfections.

Q: Which Firmware Is My Monitor Using?

A: This is only important for XL2720 users. You may check the firmware version of your monitor by going into your monitor’s service menu, by doing the following steps:

1. Turn off your monitor (tap POWER and then wait 5 seconds) if it is already on.
2. Cover the MENU touch button (4th touch button out of 5, excluding POWER button).
     Special Note: For XL2411Z users, cover 2nd touch button (from left) instead of 4th.
3. While covering MENU button with your finger, briefly tap the POWER button.
4. Nothing will happen for 3 seconds. Ignore this pause, keep covering MENU button.
5. Suddenly, all lights will flash simultaneously.
6. Release your finger off the MENU button.
7. Monitor will power up. Wait for the monitor to power on.
8. When the monitor is displaying computer desktop, tap the MENU button.
9. A blue “Service Menu” will appear, displaying the firmware version of your monitor.

V2 Firmwares will say “V002” on-screen, and show additional settings at the bottom:

Note: If BenQ/Zowie monitor touch buttons are not working reliably, make sure there is no sunlight shining onto the menu buttons, and no continuously-emitting IR sources nearby (e.g. heaters or Nintendo Wiimote bar). Make sure no objects are nearby in front or adjacent, including other monitors touching the bezel that the menu buttons are on (you may need to temporarily add space between monitors in a multiple-monitor setup).

    I bought this monitor before 1 week and i have problem with my Profiles.
    I can save any profiles any Game Mode etc…
    How can i fix it … i try 5 days to make my profile to make my settings but everytime when i restart my computer the shits start again with Brightness 100 Low blue light and Blur reduction and Resolution…

    And one more question : How can i see my FIRMWARE version.Im from Bulgaria and i buy my monitor 19.09.2014.
    Please Help me about This profiles and firmware.I pay for my monitor 700LV or (350euro)

    i send my monitor to my service because im scared to try to update firmware v2 because the monitor was in my hand for 6 days… that was a problem with update on firmware v2.Maybe that is the problem with “SAVED PROFILES” and WHILE.

    I tried the TV1350 trick with my AMD card. I’m not sure how to check if the custom resolution has been enabled or not. I can see the same modes and some odd interlaced ones on my resolution list. But the ufo test is still a mess and the blur busters utility doesn’t help it much.

    I can’t really see any difference between this new custom resolution and the old default one.

    I’m using dual link dvi and [email protected]

    I’m occasionally getting “Unable To Hail Monitor” when opening the utility and then given the error message “Error During Detecting Monitors!” in the utility. In addition to this I also get “Unsupported Firmware Detected!” from time to time.

    I’ve checked my firmware version from the service menu and it states a “V003-20140424”. From what I’ve understood, most people here have firmware version V002 and that is also what this article suggests to use. Are there some compatibility issues with the utility and my firmware version?

    I’m running Windows 8.1 on my mid-2013 MacBook Air in Bootcamp and have connected the laptop to my BenQ XL2411Z display with a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter. I’m successfully getting 120/144hz at 1080p and can get the utility working after opening and closing it a few times (sometimes it also works at the first go). Is it likely that it’s just my adapter that is causing the inconsistent behavior?

        I worked in a big computer store, seen both and currently own the XL2420Z since it’s out and let me tell you that it is a way better monitor than the older VG248QE. Combine this with the tool from here and the “Total Vertical” trick and you’ll have the best possible experience ever. I’m a Quake Live player, so it is much more important to me than if I’d just play slow fps like CS.

    How do i check which version of firmware my XL2720Z is running? I recently bought one, but the blur busters strobe utility dosnt work (“No compatible BENQ monitors have been detected” … “Try re-installing the monitor driver…”) the last note: “Try reinstalling the monitor driver? Huh? I never installed one, and my monitor shows up as “Generic PnP monitor”.. Where do i get the BENQ XL2720Z monitor driver? I already installed Display Pilot, but the monitor is still listed as PnP in the windows dropdown box.

      Oh – Okay! Im sorry i didnt notice the last input in the post.. Ive checked the monitor, im running V4 firmware – but still no fix on how to get the strobe utility to work. I guess the main problem is that my monitor is listen as a standard/generic pnp monitor in windows devices. HOW do i change this to “BenQ XL2720Z” – display pilot does not contain any drivers what so ever.

      In your troubleshoot section ive followed every step without getting it to work. Last input in troubleshooting is:

      “Detection of monitors at startup is faster if you use monitor drivers other than “Generic PnP Monitor”.”

      But there’s no follow-up explanation on how i get/install/replace the generic monitor driver.

    Hello. I need help with installing the Blur Buster Strobe Utility:
    I get the error codes 2503 and 2502 when trying to install the programm:

    I open the installer, klick next, next and next again (confirm install) to start. After this step, I get a windows popup that asks me to confirm changes made by the programm. I klick “ok”. The popup disappears and I get the message: “the installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. this may indicate a problem with this package. the error code is “2503””. And then the same message again with the error code “2502”.
    I can’t “execute as administrator” because I’m on Win8 with the only user with admin rights already.

    Please help :/

    Nice tool you’ve got there, but it causes in very fast games (such as osu!, where I found this problem) “minilaggs” (on the outer circles and the cursor, if moving). If requested I can upload a replay here from me where I found this + the download of the map (250fps needed min.)

    For the 1350 trick using CRU you say “Switch to your newly created mode. You are now using Vertical Total 1350.” how do I switch to that mode? I don’t see anywhere in the software indicating to switch to that mode, how do I know 1350 is enabled?

      When you adjust your monitor’s strobe phase while watching TestUFO Alien Invasion (full screen) — the double-image zone (horizontal band of double-image-effect) will move up and down. During VT1350 you will notice that more of the strobe crosstalk (double-image) can disappear below the bottom edge of the screen before reappearing back at the top edge of the screen.

      This is because VT1350 creates a faster scanout and longer pauses between refresh cycles. During 120Hz VT1350 on most BENQ gaming monitors —
      large vertical totals forces the BENQ to scanout a 120Hz refresh cycle in 1/150sec (instead of 1/120sec). That creates a longer blanking interval needed to let the LCD GtG transitions complete before Blur Reduction strobe backlight flashes.

      NOTE: Although Blur Busters Strobe Utility doesn’t support all BENQ/Zowie gaming monitors — However, it should be noted that the new 240Hz BENQs such as BENQ XL2540 or BENQ XL2546, both support Vertical Totals of over 2000 during 120Hz operation. In this case, it forces a 120Hz refresh cycle to scanout in 1/240sec. The 240Hz XL2540 (which has a strobe mode accessible via Service Menu) -can go up to approximately ~175-185Hz strobed without too much strobe crosstalk.

      We will be writing an article about how Vertical Totals work — this is a fairly advanced topic involving faster refresh scanouts and longer vertical blanking interval (longer pause between refresh cycles). The main effect (during manual strobe phase calibration) is the easier hiding of the strobe crosstalk double-image zone off the bottom edge of the screen without making it reappear at the top edge.

    Actually nevermind, it did show the error but the program works, I pressed override and fiddled with the settings and it seems to modify them (I checked if the values change as well within the service menu and they did)

    Hello I am poor and I do not have the means to buy me a computer monitor Benq XL2720Z 2 with the firmware 2 my monitor is limited to 60hz but I would like to test the LightBoost for 60Hz with an EDID override the problem is that I can not find an edid with firmware 2 can you please send me a EDID using the software monitor aset manager to create an inf.file so that I can make believe that I have a BENQ XL2720Z 2 with the firmware 2 to the software Blur Busters Utility Strob send this here if you can or send the file to my email adress hotgabou[at] thank for your help :/ i very need this file for override my monitor with the device manager
